Safe checks with the engine off
- Remove the ignition key or disconnect the battery where applicable and wait for moving parts to stop.
- Inspect the drive cable for obvious slack, kinks, or damage without reaching near the blade.
- Check the drive wheels for packed grass, debris, a loose hub, or a tire that is not engaging normally.
- Look for a loose or damaged belt only where the model’s instructions allow safe access.
- Notice whether the mower rolls freely when the drive control is released.
Cable slack is only one possibility
Self-propelled mowers use a control path that has to engage the drive at the right time. Too much slack can keep the mechanism from fully engaging, but tightening a cable without checking the rest of the drive can create a different problem. A worn belt, damaged gear, slipping wheel, or transmission fault can feel similar from the handle.
